Every Juneteenth we should take a moment to thank the Union soldier pictured on the right. Although Abe Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation into law in September 1862 and it became effective January 1, 1863; it took Gordon Granger riding down to Galveston, Texas to share the good news before slavery was officially ended in Texas. He made the announcement on June 19, 1865. Thanks Gordy, good looking out!
